Thank youHello,
Your question about canonicalisation and noindexing for double-filtered pages is quite pertinent, especially in the context of Shopify Web Design, where SEO considerations are often front and center.
The primary objective of canonical tags and 'noindex, follow' tags is to help search engines understand which version of a page to index and display in the search results. In the context of your double-filtered page (/collections/dining-chairs/black+fabric), both options you mentioned serve different purposes and have different impacts on SEO:
Using Canonical Tags: Changing the canonical URL to /collections/dining-chairs/black implies that this page is the "master" version, and you're suggesting that Google treat the content on /collections/dining-chairs/black+fabric as duplicate content. All the link equity and SEO benefits will be transferred to the canonical URL.
Using 'noindex, follow': When you specify 'noindex, follow', you're instructing search engines not to index the double-filtered page but still to follow all the links on that page. The benefit here is that it allows Google to crawl other relevant pages linked from it, but the page itself won't appear in search results.
Deciding between the two largely depends on your Shopify SEO strategy. If you believe that the double-filtered page doesn't add much value or is too specific to deserve a separate entry in search indexes, then setting a canonical URL to /collections/dining-chairs/black is a sensible choice. This way, you centralise SEO benefits to a more generic page that likely has a wider appeal.
On the other hand, if the double-filtered page has unique content and you believe it should be crawled but not indexed to avoid duplicate content issues, then keeping it as 'noindex, follow' would be more appropriate.
In Shopify Web Design, best practices often lean towards the use of canonical tags for similar or duplicate pages as it is more straightforward to manage and implement via Shopify's admin interface. However, you should base your decision on a careful analysis of how these pages contribute to your site's overall SEO and user experience.

When dealing with a double filter page like "/collections/dining-chairs/black+fabric," there are a couple of considerations to keep in mind regarding indexing and canonicalization.
Indexing: If you choose to use "noindex" for the double filter page, it means that search engines won't include that page in their index. This can be beneficial if the double filter page doesn't provide unique or valuable content compared to other pages on your website. By preventing indexing, you can avoid potential issues with duplicate content and ensure that search engines focus on more relevant pages.
Canonicalization: The canonical tag is used to indicate the preferred version of a page when there are multiple versions with similar content. In this case, if you set the canonical tag to "/collections/dining-chairs/black," you're essentially telling search engines that the single filter page is the preferred and primary version of the content. This can help consolidate the SEO value and avoid dilution of ranking signals.
Considering these factors, the decision between using "noindex" or changing the canonical tag to "/collections/dining-chairs/black" depends on the specific situation and your goals. Here are two scenarios:
a. If the double filter page ("/collections/dining-chairs/black+fabric") does provide unique and valuable content compared to the single filter page ("/collections/dining-chairs/black"), it may be more appropriate to change the canonical tag to "/collections/dining-chairs/black." This indicates that the double filter page is a preferred version of the content and can help search engines understand the different variations you offer.
b. If the double filter page ("/collections/dining-chairs/black+fabric") doesn't provide any substantial unique content compared to the single filter page ("/collections/dining-chairs/black"), using "noindex" can be a reasonable option. This prevents search engines from indexing a potentially redundant page and focuses their attention on the single filter page.

Unsolved Blog archive pages in Craw Error Report
Hi there, I'm new to MOZ Pro and have a question. My scan shows Archive pages as having crawl issues, but this is because Yoast is set up to block robots on these pages. Should I be allowing search engines to crawl these pages, or am I fine to leave them as I have it set up already? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

How can I provide titles and descriptive text for our list of USPs on the same page optimized both for usability and SEO
I am rebuilding our website together with an agency and I am stuck with the following problem: We have a page which will provide the visitor with a quick and convincing impression why he should chose our enterprise. On this page we want to show our USPs (Unique Selling Points) each with a title and a short description. Now my preferred way of presenting those USPs would be of a list of the titles (which permits to see all USPs without having to read a lot of text) where each title can be clicked to expand the description (in case you want to know more about this specific USP) and if you click on another title the previously clicked title description will collapse and the new description expand and so on (similar to this page: http://www.berlin-city-immobilien.de/38.html - I'm talking about the list in the middle of the page starting with the headline "Dabei profitieren Sie von folgenden Vorteilen"). Since I also want to use these descriptions as on page SEO-texts I checked whether Google might not index or at least value "click to expand content" less than plain text in the body of the page and I stumbled over this article: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-hidden-tab-content-seo-19489.html. According to this article Google will definitely discount the descriptions on my page. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem? Either by suggesting a different way to show titles and descriptions on the page or maybe by suggesting a workaround so Google will not treat the descriptions as "click to expand text". Thank you already in advance for your input.

"One Page With Two Links To Same Page; We Counted The First Link" Is this true?
I read this to day http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-one-page-two-links-page-counted-first-link-192718 I thought to myself, yep, thats what I been reading in Moz for years ( pitty Matt could not confirm that still the case for 2014) But reading though the comments Michael Martinez of http://www.seo-theory.com/ pointed out that Mat says "...the last time I checked, was 2009, and back then -- uh, we might, for example, only have selected one of the links from a given page."

Which would imply that is does not not mean it always the first link. Michael goes on to say "Back in 2008 when Rand WRONGLY claimed that Google was only counting the first link (I shared results of a test where it passed anchor text from TWO links on the same page)" then goes on to say " In practice the search engine sometimes skipped over links and took anchor text from a second or third link down the page." For me this is significant. I know people that have had "SEO experts" recommend that they should have a blog attached to there e-commence site and post blog posts (with no real interest for readers) with anchor text links to you landing pages. I thought that posting blog post just for anchor text link was a waste of time if you are already linking to the landing page with in a main navigation as google would see that link first. But if Michael is correct then these type of blog posts anchor text link blog posts would have value But who is' right Rand or Michael?0 -

New EMD update effected my mom's legit author page? From page 1 in SERP to nowhere for her name
I think my mom's site, MargaretTerry.com was hit by this update for her name "Margaret Terry". Went from bouncing around the first page on google.com and .ca all the time to nowhere on the index. The results are now very strange, a mix of Youtube, linked in, and small book stores that she has done events at recently to promote her first book. I was checking after some of my SEO buddys were freaking out about their EMD's getting hit on Sunday. She is an aspiring author with a book coming out this month. There is obviously no ads or spam content on the site... I have never done SEO for it either except a bit of on page I guess. It sucks that people might be grabbing her book soon and when they Google her name nothing shows up. This couldn't have really happened at a worse time. Not to mention the hours spent building the site to her liking, free of charge of course 🙂 Is there anyone I can contact there to help me out? Shouldn't and EMD that is someones name still rank when you search their name?
